Peace and Leftovers

It's a peaceful day. After a lovely evening with two girlfriends, I'm enjoying a day when the house is still pleasantly tidy, Inspector Gamache is waiting on the table, and leftovers will make for a tasty dinner.

I'm one of those people who can get a bit agitated if too many things are scheduled on the calendar. I need quiet time in my own nest; call me an introvert.

As for the company I had, it's a treat to have guests who enjoy food and are willing to have me test out new recipes on them. A free copy of Chatelaine magazine landed in my mailbox this week and the cover featured tomato soup with red peppers, onions and carrots in it. Surely all these vitamins and nutrients will turn me into a tower of good health.

Along with stuffed zuchinni ("zuccanoes": with brown rice, mushrooms, almonds and more), a green salad, fresh rolls and some baking, the dinner went well.

Should you be at all interested in trying a new recipe, the tomato soup is here and the zuccanoes here, as well as in the book and magazine pictured.

Back to my novel; Inspector Gamache has a murder to solve.

Enjoy your day; thank you for visiting.

  1. Karen - glad you enjoyed some good company with friends! I too need "my time" to nest - it's snowing here again today, so it looks like I will be staying indoors and doing just that! Have a great weekend!

  2. Ah Karen, we are much alike. I'm not for entertaining often, but when I do, it is enjoyable. Your menu with the friends sounds delicious and I recall the soup. If you're a Rogers customer, you can get Chatelaine for very little per month. It was $1 but I think it went up a bit.

  3. I love the sound of that soup! It sounds delicious. I hope you are enjoying your time to yourself. I know what you mean, sometimes you just need to have some space to let your mind do it's own thing don't you. xx

  4. Karen,

Your dinner with your friends sounds lovely, as well as the delicious fare! The older I get, the more a dinner party takes out of me, with all the cleaning, decorating, timing everything perfectly, not to mention the clean up! During the holidays, I hosted a Christmas Tea for my philanthropic society, (10 women on that day), and I needed a few days to recuperate! I enjoy the process, but also appreciate my quiet time afterwards.

Re: the free Chatelaine delivery...when I was in Toronto last year at this time, my mother also received a free edition, but then, we got a letter demanding payment for a subscription and I had to call to clarify the situation, at which point, they 'apologized' for the 'mix up'.

    Have a lovely weekend!

  6. Sounds like you had a nice evening, Karen. Although I love to cook, I usually have a ladies night with appetizers and cocktails. I find it easier to prepare and clean up afterward :) And, I get more time to visit with my friends.
    Enjoy your quiet time :)

  8. That Inspector Gamache is quite the charmer. I have a hard time putting Louise Penny's books down. Good thing there are leftovers for dinner so you don't have to waste time cooking! The soup looks and sounds delicious!

  9. It sounds like you had a fun evening with your girlfriends. I got a copy of Chatelaine in the mail too. They must be really looking for subscribers eh? I remember my mother getting that magazine for years and years. It was a lot bigger then and I don't really care for it so haven't subscribed to it. I must have a closer look at the articles and recipes in it though.

  10. I'm so glad you had a great time with your friends. I can identify with you on the wanting some time alone interspersed between company. The same goes for getting out and running errands, etc. I try to do it in one day so the next day I can chill!

Your food sounds delicious. I'm going to check out the soup.

  11. Sounds like you had an enjoyable evening entertaining your friends, Karen. The food sounds wonderful too. I rarely do any entertaining. I seem to be on the go so much that I just like to spend a quite evening by myself. Enjoy your book

  13. I am the same way. I have to have a certain amount of quiet time at home. Otherwise I get a bit crazy. I miss Inspector Gamache - I can't wait for her newest to be published, but she's still in the editing phase!

  15. Oh that soup sounds delish!
Thanks for posting the recipe links.
Reading, cooking and enjoying the day, sounds wonderful!!

Also, the older I get, the less I want anyone, or anything to plan my day. Just want to do my own thing....*grin***.

    Have a wonderful weekend.
    Keep warm :)

  18. Hi Karen,

Your peaceful day with a good mystery sounds just delightful. I do know what you mean about needing time alone to recharge. It's really vital, especially for creative endeavors.

  19. Snap! I too get flustered when too many things are scheduled on the family planner! I need quiet time as much as fresh air!

You've made me smile about the tomato soup: each time I make vegetable soup I always think about how healthy I will become!

    Happy weekend to you,

    Stephanie
