Christstollen: a German Christmas Treat




I can't claim any credit for baking this delight. Rather, it was a gift from a friend. A surprise gift, at that! She purchased it at a German market, here in Canada.




I've never had Christstollen before (here served with Merry Mint tea). However, I can see tracking down a recipe and making some for next Christmas. There is a German great-grandmother in the family tree, after all!

And while I'm at it, Happy Hanukkah, which is almost here!
I once lived and worked on a Cree reserve; my Jewish neighbours included my roommate and yours truly in their traditional celebrations. I can still taste the latkes!

Ok, that makes 2 things I want to learn to make: stollen and latkes! 
Recipes, anyone?

  1. The stollen looks delicious! I've never had any and I need to change that very soon!
    Latkes are easy, take a few russet potatoes (or Yukon Gold) and grate them by hand or a food processor along with a large onion, salt and pepper. One beaten egg and a little handful of matzoh meal. Mix well and make patties. Then fry them up until they are golden brown. Serve with applesauce or sour cream.

  2. If I have leftover mashed potatoes, I will make a batch of Latkes, now and then.

    We bought a Stollen at a German Christmas Mkt, here in MO last year. Very good!

  3. I never tasted a Stollen, but it loooks so delicious with ball the fruit and nuts in it! I've had many latkes and carol's recipe is perfect. The Martha Stewart website also also has a good recipe.

  6. Mmmm, I love stollen too. We were given some last year by friends who went to Germany just before Christmas and brought some back for us..it was delicious! Have a very Merry Christmas, Karen.
