A year later, up pops a blog post from me. The inspiration was a fun project. I'd been thinking I'd like to knit a cat and/or dog and snooped around to find a pattern I wanted to try.

Spring is popping up around here. It's been cool and damp, but flower are blooming in the garden and I love that!

It's been ages since I've posted and time is flying by quickly. I still have my foster cat, Mya. I don't think I mentioned -way back when- that she was diagnosed with a tumour last November. All things considered, she's doing well. As it happens, the animal rescue group I volunteer with had a Gala last night to raise funds for our rescue work with dogs and cats. It's not often I get out of jeans these days so that was certainly an occasion to do so.
Back to blooms. It seems to me that the small amount of effort it takes to plant bulbs one fall is disproportionate to the amount of delight they offer for years to follow.

I was surprised and intrigued when a representative from Yarn Canada contacted me to ask if I'd review Noro Kureyon yarn. In the interest of trying new things, both the yarn and a review, I accepted the invitation and offer of yarn. From the forty Kureyon options available (yes, forty), I chose three skeins which were promptly sent my way. The only request made by the representative was for my review to include a link to the beautiful colourways available.

With a black jacket and purplish parka in mind, I decided on #359 (Green, Blue, Grey, Purple). I tend to lean more towards monochromatic garments and thought theses hues would add a smidge of much-needed zing to my winter outerwear.

The hand-dyed, worsted-weight yarn has luscious colours. It's 100% wool from Japan and feels soft on my skin. The 50 gram (1.7 oz) skeins are 100 metres (109 yards) in length and 4.5-5 mm (7-8 US) knitting needles are recommended. The gauge is 14-16 stitches and 22-24 rows per 10 cm (4 inches). In other words, it wouldn't take ages to knit up something cozy, even though my skills are more comparable to those of the proverbial tortoise as opposed to the hare.

Picture winter walks in the woods and strolling by the lake under a big, azure sky on a crisp day. Mulling over ideas of what to make (a cowl or scarf came to mind), I landed on the idea of mittens. I have an ancient pair of heavily insulated mitts for frigid days but thought a pretty pair for less polar-bear-weather strolls would be welcome.

The pattern is free on Ravelry. I've dubbed them my Meandering Mittens but their proper name is ABC (Awesome Basic Cable) Mittens. I had wondered if the cables would show to advantage with the self-striping Kureyon and I think they do. Looking at the palm side, it's evident that plain knitting would be lovely too as the colours themselves create a pleasing design. I used 4.5 mm needles for the mittens, with a slightly smaller size for the ribbing because my wrists are small. Initially, I had been a bit taken aback by the thickness of the yarn in some places and the more tightly spun thinness of it in others. I needn't have been concerned because it knit up beautifully.

Originally, my plan was to try to match the mittens, but given the way the colours changed and the individual nature of each skein, I decided to embrace my burgeoning funky side, merrily knit, and see what happened! It paid off. Who says symmetry is always best?

Having used most of 2 skeins for the mittens, I thought a hat might be in order with the third one. Sometimes the hood on my parka or a toque pulled down over my ears is a bit more toastiness than is needed. The top of this hat, along with the rolled rim, appealed to me.

This pattern is also free on Ravelry and is called the Noro One-Skein Hat. I knit the top/down version on 4.5 mm double-pointed needles, switching to a circular one when it started to grow. Round and round it went, the Kureyon colours allowing an easy pattern to turn into a snazzy little wearable item!
Three skeins, three items. I enjoyed working with the Noro Kureyon yarn and love the finished projects: a colourful rolled rim hat and some fun and funky mittens. Anyone up for a walk?

I did a bit of knitting in early December. This was part of a gift for a Secret Santa exchange at a party for the volunteers at a local animal rescue group. Not knowing who would receive it, I was opting for something suitable for a man or woman. I've since seen the recipient wearing her scarf, so that's a good sign. It's easy to knit and the free pattern, called Christian's Scarf, is on Ravelry here.
Hello, again. It's been months since I've paid any attention to my blog and thought I'd make a bit of an effort to get back to it. I find it too easy to be a homebody these days, so took advantage of a recent sunny day and headed out to a local conservation area. I was rewarded by the sight of oak leaves. When I was growing up (not where I live now), I remember seeing oak trees all the time. So pretty.

Along with the wooded areas, my walk took me by areas of milkweed. I did spot an orange butterfly, which I assumed was a monarch, staying rather late in the season. Carrying on, I paused on a viewing platform by the marsh.

A stroll by the lake was also part of the trek. The woods, marshlands and a huge lake, all in an hour or so.

The moon was the incentive to head out for a stroll this evening. Various old songs have been playing in my head. Just now I thought of the lines:

The moon belongs to everyone

The best things in life are free

I hope you're enjoying the moon too.

I thought I'd say a quick hello to you. It's a quiet day. Mya the foster cat is snoozing, laundry is swishing and the fridge is partway through a good cleaning. I'll watch Vera, sip a cup of coffee and iron away. Not exciting, I know, but there's a certain peace that comes when things around me are brought back to some kind of order.

I started to play in the garden this past week. Colours are appearing and I've been raking some leaves and pulling a few weeds. Do you have a gardening routine that you follow? Things get out of hand here, as spring turns to summer, and each year I promise myself things will be better!

Planting bulbs in previous autumns: that is an act of delayed gratification that offers a big payoff! Some flowers now and tulips to follow.

Welcome to the final week of ☀Sunlit Sunday for 2016. For most of us, spring has begun (ice storms notwithstanding). Others are all set to roll into autumn. Wherever you're from, thank you for joining in this year, even if this week is your first time.
Tulips called to me this week, in colours often associated with Easter. I have some tulip leaves in the garden, but I haven't looked at them since things got a nice coating of ice a couple of days ago. I hope they survived and spring forth now that it's getting a bit warmer.

Welcome to ☀Sunlit Sunday, our second last gathering for 2016.

Spring is arriving this weekend (for some of us), so farewell to winter.

It was a gorgeous day for a long walk by the lake and a long talk with an old friend. The beginning of the week was grey, but things have turned around. Another bit of exercise was attempting to manipulate a large, past-its-prime wool area rug out of the house, into my car and up to the waste management facility. The name is grander than the former one: the dump.

I thought I'd take a photo of the opening Christmas cactus flowers and someone decided to get in on the act and steal the spotlight. The colours look rather bright, but I didn't tinker with them, it was just the bright afternoon sunlight having some fun.

Welcome to ☀Sunlit Sunday. It's a bit of a mad dash to get this post up and ready by (roughly) 8 pm. Emails are flying back and forth. I'm lucky enough to have some new furniture arriving Tuesday morning, but I just found out today it was ready and I still have the old sofa and chairs in my living room.

Emails to a couple of places that might take donations. Emails to a young woman I know who has seen it and sat upon it and thinks it would suit her just fine. I'm sending photos to her and pointing out the items do have some issues. Let just say the artfully tossed throws are there for a reason! I hope she takes my advice and comes over to take a good long look at each piece before she and her husband rent a trailer, just in case.

Meanwhile, the pot of tulips is still hanging in, catching the light and looking lovely. The Christmas cactus, which had a few blooms in December seems to have plans to produce some flowers for Easter.

The sunny, afternoon light show will go on later in the day, once the clocks change this weekend and we "spring forward". If you're in Saskatchewan, you needn't bother! For those who live in other countries, Saskatchewan is one of Canada's western provinces and the only one that does not set the clocks forward an hour in springtime and back an hour in the fall. You may not have known that, but perhaps you've heard of our new Prime Minister's visit to Washington. Justin Trudeau has made quite a splash!

The wonderful foster beast. Little does she know her living room is about to be torn apart. She is a sunny presence in my home and makes me laugh every day. I'd write more, but Mya has decided to rub her head on my laptop in a plea for attention. She is not to be ignored!
Welcome to ☀Sunlit Sunday this week. We'll wrap things up at the end of the month, but, I hope, keep in touch beyond then. I still need to get better at blogging more often and figuring out what I want to say.
I can't just share foster cat photos! This little miss has been enjoying her cat tree more and more since I've moved it into the living room. I think Mya likes the late afternoon sun. She is very active and can amuse herself with her Crinkleball toy, tossing it around, chasing it and even carrying it over to me to throw for her. Maybe she's part dog. I do think her colouring is beautiful, but I'm not sure how to describe it.

Speaking of colour, I picked up a pot of tulips in the grocery store. I admired the soft pink ones, but opted for something with a bit more zing. I'll enjoy them opening up indoors, then can plant the bulbs in the garden come fall. Double the pleasure.
One more of Mya, shimmering in the sun. If, by the way, you have any ideas of how I promote this girl on the animal rescue Facebook page, do pass them along. Adoption is the goal, but she's fun to have around in the meantime!
With lovely Purl having been adopted, I now find myself welcoming another foster cat. Mya moved in on Thursday afternoon and she has adjusted well.

I had her set up in the guest room, a safe place to make herself comfortable with food, water, cat tree and litter box on hand. By Friday, she was more than happy to explore other parts of the house. Now, she has access to the main floor of my bungalow, but still chooses to do her serious napping in her room. Maybe it's the sunny, southern exposure!

I don't know if you can tell by the photos, but she is a tiny cat, about half the size of Purl. She's the same age, though, turning 7 years old next month. Here's hoping someone wonderful applies to the animal rescue group to adopt her. Not everyone considers taking in a more mature animal, but we had a 14-year-old dog adopted today, so there is reason to be hopeful and look on the sunny side of possibilities.
Welcome to ☀Sunlit Sunday. It was a busy week, with a few little messes to untangle, but the sun shone on many days.

I still have a centrepiece I received in December. The carnations are long since gone, the Christmas balls removed, but most of the greenery remains and few more pinecones were added to what is now a winter arrangement.
That's because, after 9 months with me and nearly 2 years with our animal rescue, Purl has been adopted by a lovely couple. That, my friends, is sunny news for this almost 7-year-old kitty! Have you ever considered fostering? There is such a need in many places.
One bright spot in the week was being introduced to this young woman's music. Her name is Annie Sumi and she was a featured performer at a local gallery event. Hello and welcome. When the sun isn't shining and ☀Sunlit Sunday is fast approaching, you point the camera at something pretty anyway. This amaryllis is adding some zip to my living room and I'm glad about that.
Now, Purl (my foster cat) knows all about appreciating the creature comforts of life and finding sunny moments. I've been noticing her absence today. Last night, she started an Extended Visit with a nice couple considering adopting her. The wonderful thing about an EV is that people have a chance to see if the cat or dog that interests them is a good fit. An EV happens only after an application, interview and so forth. I'll have to wait and see what happens! Patience is not always my strong suit. Whether or not an adoption results, it was a bright spot knowing that Purl was finally getting some serious attention. After all, she comes with almost 7 years of cat experience!
Thank you very much to those who participated in ☀Sunlit Sunday last week and who visited the linked posts. I know I enjoyed that part! One thing: I noticed that there were some blogs that accepted only Google+ comments. In those cases, I looked for an email so I could contact you that way. Is there a way around this little problem of not being about to comment, does anyone know, without setting up a Google+ account?

There was intermittent sunshine in my corner of Canada this week. Whether bright or dull outside, it's a always pleasure to pick up a good book. The one pictured here is Louise Penny's The Nature of the Beast. Some of you may be as hooked on Penny's series as Yours Truly. I just happened to notice the sunlight on it and reached for the camera.
Hello and welcome to ☀Sunlit Sunday! The purpose of this little annual gathering to to focus on the sunny things in your life and to share them during, for many of us, the grey days of wintertime. Let's celebrate this season, whether it's snow-covered and cold or bright and warm in your part of the world. You may have noticed that this first photo does not feature any sunbeams. It just goes to show that the bright spots in life needn't feature literal rays of light, but rather things that bring you a bit of joy.

The sun did make a brief appearance this morning, so I whisked the paperwhites into the kitchen for another quick photo. I have a few pots of these in the house; most have yet to open. It's lovely to something blooming and fragrant in January.
Also in the kitchen, some fruit in the sunlight. Nothing fancy, but who says a shining spot in the day needs to be grand to be appreciated!

For those of you have been here before, you may recall that I foster for a local animal rescue group, one cat at a time. This is Purl. The sky may have been overcast when this was taken today, but she brightens up my home with her personality and purrs. I'll forgive her for claiming my chair when I got up to take a few photos. The girl likes to be comfortable!
Hello again. It's been a very long while since I've posted. I spend a
fair amount of time on my laptop for some volunteering I'm doing and I was
getting a wee bit tired of looking at the screen. Hence, my lengthy
absence from blogging. Then, I told myself I needed to update my header to reflect the
winter season and to start visiting blogs again before I posted something. Phooey to that, here I am, wishing you a Happy New Year with springtime blooms in the header. C'est la vie!

To catch up a bit, here is the finished knitting project that I hinted at months ago. This little girl is one of the mice from Mary Jane's Tearoom. I haven't made a toy before and I know I have a couple of things I'd do a bit differently, but any little blunders are completely my own fault and certainly not that of the wonderful pattern.

It was a fun project! I find myself perching this mouse around the
house.

Currently, she is sitting on my desk to act as a reminder that I
want to be more creative and make things in 2016. I'll have to think about that and figure out some plans.

Speaking of plans, a few people have emailed and asked if ☀ Sunlit Sunday
would be running again this winter. Since there is a some interest,
let's start it up again this coming weekend. I'll put up a post at 8 pm (Eastern Standard Time) on Saturday evening and we'll see who drops by to add a link to their sunlit post. For those who
are unfamiliar with ☀Sunlit Sunday, the details are below. All are welcome to join in
and help brighten up the winter months, even if it isn't winter in your part of the world.

Create
a post on the following theme: "sunlit". You may choose to include
photos and/or words that illustrate a sunlit place or thing, a "sunny
disposition", a sunny thought, or any other sunlit-related idea. Have fun with this! Be literal or figurative; be you!

All photos must be your own or used with the express permission of the photographer.

Copy my URL for this week's "Sunlit Sunday" and create a link on your post that will lead back here.

Copy the URL for your specific post and add it to the amazing linking tool, below.

Testing the links would be a great idea!

The more links you visit and comment on, the more fun you'll have. Let's spread a little sunshine!

Thank you for dropping by today!

This summer has been zipping by, with an unusual mixture of cool and hot, humid days. Last night, a couple of thunder storms passed through. The garden is looking a bit straggly, but there are still colours to enjoy. What, pray tell, is a good way to keep weeds from springing up between patio bricks? I have a hearty crop of them that need attention!

I decided to knit a little something, for fun, this summer. It isn't completed just yet, but I hope to finish it soon. Then I'll let you know from whom I bought the pattern, a blogger in England. The soft colours relate to some in the garden, so I include them here.

On the cat fostering front, Purl is still with me. It's been just over 3 months since she moved in and made herself at home. Luckily, thunder storms don't phase her in the least. She's a lovely girl, but she hasn't had any serious interest yet. Here's hoping for a boost in cat and dog adoptions this month.

Blogging has taken a back seat to other things, but I thought I'd participate in Judith's Mosaic Monday today.

There is something about peonies. They are just so extravagant: big, blowsy and beautifully fragrant. They swirl into spring, elegantly dressed in pinks, first these ones, then my deep rose-coloured variety and finally the creamy ones which are still tightly bound buds in the front garden. In the collage above are the old-fashioned kind that fall over with their own
weight and dance along the surface of the grass. Especially today, with
heavy rain this morning and more to come later. My mother always said a downpour was guaranteed when peonies were in bloom.

I wonder what readers who live in warmer climes think about the
adoration so many northerners have for peonies, these hardy plants that
will live for a hundred years. Maybe that is a significant part of their appeal; they not only cope with the seasons, they appreciate the cold weather.

Yesterday found me sitting on the ground and breathing in the scent from these lush beauties. I was supposed to be weeding. I get the strangest things taking up residence in my yard, uninvited. At one point, my hands were stinging after grabbing a mystery plant to remove it and finding the little hairs on it had the inclination to fight back. There is a reason why people wear gardening gloves. Lesson learned.
(You met my new foster, Purl, in my last post.)
Poppy, from Poppy View, recently mentioned in an email that she hoped I'd share some soon. She is such an encouraging and thoughtful person.

Being a bit mad for peonies, more will follow. I'll wait till they are wildly abundant before I pick any. Although, perhaps just one on my bedside table might be an idea . . .

In the "silly me" department, I'd thought these were phlox and had been purchased as such at a plant sale some years ago. Claudia, from Mockingbird Hill Cottage, recently showcased hers and identified them as Dames Rocket. One distinguishing characteristic between the 2 plants, she wrote, was that Dames Rocket has four petals and phlox has five.
Meet Purl, a 6-year-old lovely girl, mostly gleaming black with a touch of white below her throat and a couple of white patches on her underside. Purl, for various reasons unrelated to her sweet self, has been in a few foster homes and has been with the animal rescue group for over a year. Needless to say, I've been slapping up pictures of her on the animal rescue Facebook page in an attempt to catch the eye of someone who can offer her a wonderful home. I'll keep you posted.
For those who had followed the story of my foster cat, Cameo, the news is great. She was adopted into a wonderful home; one of her roommates is a certified therapy dog! I have a special place in my heart for the people who took in a 9 year cat. Better with age, right?
It's 7 pm as I write this, there's daylight outside, the Mourning Doves are cooing and the sky is blue! That must mean it's
time to wrap up ☀Sunlit Sunday for another season. Thank you for linking
and/or visiting the posts you've found here.

I may not have anything but snowdrops in the garden, but there will be crocuses blooming soon, at least inside. These one are now in pretty pottery pots.

My indoor garden remains a bit confused about the time of year. The shamrock is producing a few blooms, in a nod to St. Patrick's Day past.

The amaryllis flower will open soon. There was a second one, but in moving the pot from one spot to another I knocked it off the stem. Arghhh! I saved it, though, and it's sitting in a bit of water. I'll see what happens. Maybe it will still think it's Christmastime and unfurl its petals.
As for my foster girl, Cameo, she has begun a second week of her Extended Visit. She's a big hit with the people in the household of the applicant; they're hoping a second week will have her be more open to the presence of the dog. Cameo has been content to curl up in laps, get petted and brushed and hasn't seen the need to become further acquainted with the other 4 footed resident! The story continues . . .
Happy Spring! It has officially arrived here and most of the snow has melted away. It was time to pull out the rabbit and hang the wreath on the door.
Even better, it was time to admire the snowdrops that have finally bloomed, little clumps of them here and there in the garden. Whatever the sky may say, it's a sunny day when those first shoots pop out of the ground.
A couple of snowdrops made in it indoors for closer inspection and just to celebrate the new season's arrival.
On the foster front, last night Cameo went on her Extended Visit to the home of a lovely woman who applied for her. The Meet and Greet last Saturday, which included her dog, was a success. Now it's a matter of seeing how Cameo fits into her home and, more specifically, whether the cat accepts living with the dog. He is used to cats; we'll see if Cameo adjusts to him. She certainly likes people! The EV is scheduled for a week, but can be adjusted if need be. It's quite the process; 2 volunteers there last evening, dealing with paperwork and answering/asking questions. That was another bright spot in the week, seeing a couple of volunteers give up part of their Friday evening (after working all week) to help with animal rescue. It warms my heart.

Your turn. This is the second last week of Sunlit Sunday.
Life is a little bit full right now, so I'll be brief. My sunny news of the week is that Cameo had a "Meet and Greet" today. She met a lovely woman and her very large Golden rescue who is a certified therapy dog. He visits hospitals and seniors. Isn't that great?

The visit went well, so a home visit will be scheduled next in order to see if the critters can live happily under the same roof. Cross your fingers, please! This nine year old kitty may just have some Irish luck going for her!

I will get around to visit the posts I missed from last week and all from this set. I do apologize for being so painfully slow this year in getting back to you!

Your turn, now.
