May's Flower

Tucked in the back corner of the garden,
behind the magnolia tree,
  in the shadows,
grows May's birth month flower,
a favourite of mine.

Lily of the Valley.

Waiting to be tucked into a tiny vase, here are some blooms resting on the charming, decades-old book that Daphne from Ivy, Phyllis and Me sent me last year.

When I was a young girl, I remember that some women would wear Lily of the Valley fragrance.

That may well be passé by now, but the scent is still heady and intoxicating.

Finding a home with a sprig of lilac, the air is perfumed by my cosy reading chair.

Enough sitting here for now, the house is calling to me to get things in order. With a big temperature drop since yesterday, the gardening will be put on hold for today in favour of addressing the indoor jobs: cleaning, sorting, pitching, maybe even ordering a desk. I miss having one!

Enjoy your weekend!

Thank you for dropping by and for the comments you leave. I'm behind in responding, but will do so over the next couple of days. I'll sit by the sweet-smelling flowers and inhale my favourite scents of spring.

For the first time, I'm pleased to be linking with "A Favourite Thing" at Mockingbird Hill Cottage.

  3. Beautiful photos of the lily of the valley. I have them growing along the foundation in front and they are just starting to bloom. I picked a few yesterday and love their sweet scent. I hope it warms up! It's very wet here. Blessings, Pam

  4. Good Afternoon Karen, Thank you so much for mentioning me in your post, it was very kind of you. Do you know I love Lily of the Valley as the flowers are so delicate.... but I have real problems growing it. I have tried planting bulbs and I also bought plants in the green, but they just will not grow.
Your Lily of the Valley looks lovely and perfect for a small vase. Lilac is another favourite of mine. Your house will smell beautiful whilst you are inside doing your housework.
As always Karen, your photographs are stunning.
    Enjoy your weekend.
    Best Wishes to you,
    Daphne

  7. My little bouquet in the kitchen window has faded so I'll have to pick some more. I used to have 'Muget de bois' perfume when I was a youngster. (that was many moons ago) I like the picture of the lily-of-the-valley with the lilac.

  8. Such delicate and pretty flowers. They are old-fashioned and sweet smelling which makes them winners in my book. But I have none in my garden - I'll look for some bulbs in the fall.

  11. It's a perfume I love too, but sadly have no lily-of-the-valley in my garden. It is, truly, the scent of May.

  12. Now I realize how pretty lily-of-the-valley are! It is well known that theses flowers are grown in the northern part of Japan island" Hokkaido". Your lily-of-the-valley looks more bright in your arrangement.love it!!

  13. Such a pretty, delicate flower!

We too had the temperature drop...they forecasted "patchy" frost. Good thing I covered everything last night as what I see is a very hard frost, not patchy but everywhere!

My yard is landscaped with light rugs, blankets, tupperware, and pots and pans! :)

  16. Hello fellow Canadian!:)

Visiting via Claudia's. Your lovely link captured my attention! Can you believe I've never encountered this most delicate and pretty flower? How can this be? I grew up in Toronto and to my surprise, have never been lucky enough to have taken in the famous scent of this dainty beauty! I'll have to depend on your most gorgeous images for now.

  17. Absolutely gorgeous photos. The blooms are so delicate but intensely beautiful. Fragrance always takes things over the top, doesn't it?

  18. I love lily of the valley. We had them at one of our homes and it was always so neat to see them crop up each spring.

  19. Stunning photos. I can only imagine the scent of those beauties. I am way behind in my cleaning, too. Better get at it.

  20. What beautiful photos! My parents always had Lily of the Valley tucked in a back corner of their garden. I went looking for it this year, thinking I might bring a little home -- but it looks as if my dad has pulled it all out to make room for new things. I confess, I was a little sad. I might have to go BUY some of my own to tuck in the back corner of the garden at my house!

  22. Gorgeous lily of the valley! They really do have a beautiful scent. We had a whole bunch of them growing by the back patio at our first little house.
