♪ Backyard Birdsong: Give a Little Listen! ♪

After some snow shoveling this morning, I spend a bit of time in my backyard and spotted this feathered lovely in the shrub just over the fence.

I looked in a bird book and wondered whether it was a Slate-Coloured Junco (Northern Junco; Snowbird). Bird watching is not my forté.

Can anyone identify it?

In addition to needing to know more about birds, there are days when I wish I had a snazzy camera and knew how to use it. The blur factor does kick in with my "point and shoot". I didn't want to get closer to this little one lest it fly away.

Care for the "soundtrack"?

Give a listen.

Here's hoping you have something to sing about and a welcoming shelter when the snow flies.

  1. I don't really know anything about birds. I'm amazed at all your snow. I'm sitting here in shorts and t-shirt plus I have the AC on!

  2. Those birds must be very happy with the snow. I loved your soundtrack! We have sun here for the first time in ages - I'm loving it!

  3. that certainly is a slate coloured junco Karen. How lovely to hear the birdy music from your garden. We also had some ice rain and snow overnight, making everything white once again (at least for a day or two)

  4. Karen, I'm afraid I don't know what kind of bird it is but he sure is cute.
We had snow here too. I didn't see any birds when I was outside shoveling. I hope you are all warm and cozy in your little home.

  5. Hi Karen,
I am afraid I don't know what type of bird that is.
The soundtrack was great...we have a lot of birds singing all day it seems now! YAY!
We have a pretty new snow fall as well, but I have been noticing that it does not get dark until after 6:30pm which is very nice!
    All the Best,

  6. I have five bird books at the ready on the bar but never look at them. I admire the birds at the feeder and marvel at their beauty. god knows who that little fella is. It is nearly 80 degrees here and the birds are eating a container of seed every 24hrs. good thing I love em.

  11. Crafty Gardener had the answer for you - dark eyed junco. Good shots. I like the fluffy snow on the branches. I had a northern mockingbird at the suet cake today. I've never seen one before. I'll post a pic tomorrow. Have a great weekend. Pamela

  12. I have been watching and identifying birds for the past 20 years and I can assure you this is a slate colour junco. Isn't he cute ? I think it's very difficult to have a sharp photo of a bird unless you have a tripod, but the first photo is pretty good.
I enjoyed the video, it was lovely to hear the birds !
