Corraling the Yarn Stash & a Question

Given my houseguest had to cancel this weekend's visit, I had a little time on my hands. Time to corral the yarn stash!

Some yarns were squished into a small pine cupboard. Some MacAusland wool was lurking in the cedar-lined blanket box, keeping company with the sheep frolicking about on the flannel pajamas.

"If I store it, sweaters will come," to paraphrase a line from an old baseball movie. Apparently, it isn't quite that simple. I should be wearing this wool already. Sigh.

I digress. Back to finding the yarns a home. "Location, location, location," say the realtors.  I bought some bins (half price) and got busy. The baby yarns are in their new nursery.

Bits and pieces of this-and-that-yarns are also housed, ready for scarves, hats, mittens and maybe a little cotton shell for next summer?

Ta-da!
There they are; all of the yarns neatly tucked in the guest room closet, declaring,
"Enough, already. Knit something!"

Rest assured, I do knit (not often enough), it isn't a matter of buy and never use...

I made this for one little person...

and these to go with the sweater.

However, it's confession time.  I have a bad habit of starting something, getting distracted by other things, then avoiding the project because I have to sort out where I left off way back when. Silly, silly, silly.

Bad habits are made to be broken. This winter, I'll wear this sweater! Feel free to nag me about its progress from time to time.

Many of you are wonderfully talented knitters, crafters, painters, "do-it-all"ers. Some of you have lovely studios where you work/play, others find any corner they can. Here's the question: Do you plan a time to do your projects every day or just pick them up now and again? I'm curious, inquistive (or maybe just plain nosy). The whole creative process fascinates me.

I'd love to hear your answers, or any other thoughts you have to share.

I'm happy to be linking with "Little Red House" for "Mosaic Monday".

Warm Wishes,
Karen

  1. That is a wonderful stash you have accumulated...beautiful colors. I am not a knitter, but I am a seamstress/quilter. When I am working on a project I do need to plan for a quiet time to work. Usually it is in morning.

  2. I don't knit but I crochet and I am not as organized as you. However I feel inspiration to empty some plastic boxes and fill em up. Great photos. I have a bad habit of starting one thing and starting another before finishing the first one. Oh well love it anyway.

  3. I get in the mood to crochet or knit...or sew and that's all I want to do for awhile! Then I take a break. I'm always working on a few projects at the same time! Love your stash...so many pretty colors! ♥

  4. Gosh Karen, that is a lot of wool! I don't knit or crochet but have done ceramics and tole painting in the past, this year I started making my own cards. It's hard to find time in the summer but now with the cooler weather I'll work in my craft area more and mostly when the mood suits me.
Perhaps with the knitting (beautiful items shown) you can schedule 'me time' to work an hour or so every day?
I'll try to remember to ask how the sweater is coming along. :-)

  5. I giggled reading your post. I wish my stash of yarn was this small! Fortunately, (or unfortunately as the case may be) I have a wonderful friend who gave me her mother's stash of yarn ... can you imagine ... my stash doubled in size. I've made one afghan for Christmas and am working on another. They are both crochet and both for gifts. The yarn wasn't part of my stash ... had to go out and buy more!!!!! I don't schedule. When the chores are done, I sit down and grab the hook and get busy. What ever you do ... HAVE FUN!!!!

  6. Hi Karen, these are good quality yarns. The baby sweater and booties are well done. I crochet, and I do not knit. I wish I could be as organized as you are. I have a lot of unfinished projects.

  7. It looks like you have enough wool there for many projects. With the weather here getting cooler the warmth of a sweater would be nice to have. V

  10. What a lovely stash of yarn. It will inspired you just to see it if you remember to look in the guest closet. I am blessed with time to make my projects so I just wait for the inclination to strike and then I'm hard at it until it's complete. I do have a number of ongoing projects just like everyone. Some of them need to be ditched because I am pretty sure I'm never going back to them.

  12. I've tried to learn how to knit and crochet a few times but then I get frustrated and don't stick with it. I keep thinking I'll try again as I love all the wonderful creations I see on many blogs. The sweater you made is very pretty! I think you'll do well now that you have all your yarns organized together for inspiration.

  13. What a gorgeous stash of yarn. I tend to attack projects when I'm in the mood, often in the evenings. But I have waaaay more fabric than yarn since I sew more than I knit.

I love that pile of soft gray yarn in the last photo, what are you making from it? I'm hoping to make a Mobius wrap this autumn.

And the baby things - so adorable. Lucky little one.

  14. Great job organizing - I've been working on the same for my craft space and it's slow progress! The baby sweater is adorable too. :)

As for planning when to do projects, I have a problem with enjoying too many crafts! Granted - it's not a BAD problem, but I'm always switching between crafts so it's more a question of what I'm feeling like doing on any particular day.

  17. "If I store it, sweaters will come,"...hahahaha. I'm totally of this train of thought! Organizing is such a wonderful way to get fired up and inspired to tackle projects! I just did some of the same and am hoping it pays off!

  18. HI Karen, I do most of my knitting and crochet work while I watch my favourite British soap, Coronation Street. Now it is on for an hour each day I get lots more done. But I always keep the basket by my chair so if time does happen during the day the project is handy to pick up and work on.

  20. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one. I just took out my stash and played with it the other day. It's almost as enjoyable as actually knitting with it! :)
